1. What exactly is a water leak detector?
A water leak detector is a small device that detects when water collects in places where it doesn't belong: in the basement, under the washing machine, or on the floor next to the sink. The core component is a sensor, which triggers an alarm even with just a few millimeters of water, via app, or via a Wi-Fi signal.
Usually they send you push notifications to your phone, no matter where you are. Some models can even be integrated into your smart home system. This way, you can react immediately in an emergency or, with a water leak detector that includes a shut-off function, automatically stop the water supply.
In short: A water leak detector is your early warning system against costly water damage.
2. What damage water leak detectors prevent
Imagine it's been raining for days, you forgot to clean the gutters, your outdoor drain is clogged, and suddenly water seeps through the basement door. In this case, a water leak detector in the basement sounds an alarm as soon as the sensor registers water on the floor, even before the entire area is flodded.
Also a leaky main water valve or a defective backwater valve can become problematic: A worn stopper on the main valve (I just experienced this myself) is enough, and then water runs unnoticed into the room for hours. A smart water detector with Wi-Fi and an app immediately reports the incident to your phone, whether you're at home or on the go.
Even more common in everyday life: The hose of the washing machine bursts or slips out of its mounting. A water detector with a shut-off function can be a real lifesaver here. It detects the water leakage and, in the best case, directly stops the supply.
