Dishwasher Getting No Water: The 7 Most Common Causes and Solutions

Is your dishwasher getting no water, leaving you facing a mountain of dirty plates? This isn't just annoying; it can stem from various causes, ranging from simple fixes to more serious defects. The good news: you can probably resolve many of these issues yourself. In this article, you’ll learn why your dishwasher isn't filling up, what the underlying causes are, and how to fix them.

Why is my dishwasher getting no water? The Basics

When your dishwasher isn't pulling in water, it’s usually due to an interrupted supply. The appliance requires sufficient water pressure and an unobstructed line to function correctly. Modern dishwashers have various safety systems built-in that stop the water flow if a problem is detected.

The problem often creeps up: first, the cycle takes a bit longer, then the machine stops entirely. Sometimes you might hear noises as if the dishwasher is trying to work, but the water simply isn't arriving.

The following issues could have occurred:

1. Water supply is turned off

❌ The problem: The shut-off valve under the sink is not fully open or was accidentally closed.

✅ The solution: Check the tap under your sink.

2. Clogged or kinked inlet hose

❌ The problem: Limescale deposits, dirt, or even a kinked hose can block the flow. This is common in regions with hard water. (Tip: You can use a hardness test kit to check your local water quality).

✅ The solution: Switch off the dishwasher and unplug it. Turn off the water tap, remove the inlet hose, and check it for kinks or blockages. Rinse the hose with clean water. Ensure the small filter/sieve at the end of the hose is clear. You can clean it easily with an old toothbrush.

3. Defective Aquastop

❌ The problem: Many modern machines feature an "Aquastop", which is a safety valve that shuts off the water if it detects a leak. If this has triggered or is broken, the machine gets no water.

✅ The solution: Perform a "bucket test." Close the tap, disconnect the hose, and hold it over a bucket. Open the tap—you should get at least 3 liters within 10 seconds. If significantly less flows out, the Aquastop may be defective. Since this is an electrical component, do not attempt to repair it yourself.

4. Faulty solenoid valve

❌ The problem: The solenoid valve regulates the water intake. If it’s dead, no water enters which is often accompanied by a humming sound as the machine tries to open the valve.

✅ The solution: A humming noise is a classic sign. Listen closely; if you hear a buzz but see no water, professional inspection is usually needed. Do not open the internal housing yourself; contact customer service.

5. Too low water pressure

❌ The problem: The water pressure in your house has dropped and is too low for the dishwasher.

✅ The solution: Check other taps in the house. If the pressure is low everywhere, contact your water provider. If it’s only the dishwasher, the issue lies in the hose or valve.

6. Defective door lock or seal

❌ The problem: For safety reasons, the dishwasher will not start the water intake if it detects the door isn't properly closed.

✅ The solution: Check if the door clicks into place correctly and if the seals are intact. Clean the seals regularly and replace them if you see cracks.

7. Electronic issues

❌ The problem: The control board is malfunctioning and isn't sending the signal to open the water intake.

✅ The solution: Try a complete reset. Unplug the machine for 10 minutes and plug it back in. If the problem persists, the electronics are likely defective, and you should consult a specialist.

Dishwasher getting no water and humming – what does it mean?

If your machine is humming but staying dry, the sound is a vital clue. It indicates that the pump or the inlet valve is trying to work, but the water is blocked.

Possible causes of the humming:

  • • The supply valve is blocked but tries to open
  • • The circulation pump runs but receives no water
  • • A foreign object is blocking the system
  • • The valve is calcified and stuck

First aid for a humming dishwasher:

  1. Turn off the dishwasher immediately
  2. Diagnose the cause using the tips above
  3. If the humming continues without water, call a professional. Running the pump "dry" for too long can cause permanent damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

01.

Why Is My Dishwasher Not Filling With Water?

The most common reasons are a closed water tap under the sink, a clogged inlet filter, or a kinked supply hose. Essentially, the path between your home's pipes and the machine is physically blocked or shut off.

02.

Why does my dishwasher make a sound but not fill with water?

A humming or buzzing sound usually means the solenoid valve or the pump is receiving power and trying to work, but no water is passing through. This happens if the valve is jammed by limescale or if the Aquastop safety system has been triggered to prevent a leak.

03.

Why is there no water coming out of my dishwasher?

The causes may be a closed tap, a clogged hose, a faulty aquastop, a broken solenoid valve, or low water pressure. Humming often indicates aquastop or valve problems.
